This article provides a complete analysis of the image of the main Russian city of St. Peters- burg in the works of the great Russian writer of the 19th century N.V. Gogol. The Petersburg theme is of great importance in the work of many Russian authors, starting with the work of M. Lomonosov and ending with the works of writers of the 20th century. This city acts not only as a background where events take place in the works, but also as a symbol that reveals topical social problems. The work reveals the meaning, place and role of the image of St. Petersburg in the work of N.V. Gogol, as well as the originality of the writer in the image of this city. To analyze the image of St. Petersburg in the works of N.V. Gogol, the following works were cho- sen: “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”, “The Missing Letter”, “Marriage”, “The Government Inspector”, “Petersburg Tales” and “Dead Souls”
