ETHNOCULTURAL FEATURES OF REPRESENTATION OF WEATHER PHENOMENA IN RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH

The study identifies universal and ethno-specific aspects in meteorological phenomena representation when comparing Russian and English languages. The concept of "semantic relativity" is clarified as linguistic semantics conditionality by extralinguistic and ethnocultural factors. A comprehensive analysis of meteorological vocabulary was conducted using semantic and component analysis, examination of paradigmatic relationships, syntagmatic compatibility, and idiomaticity. English linguoculture differentiates varieties of rain/fog, while Russian distinguishes detailed classification of snowfall types. English demonstrates geographic components in meteorological vocabulary semantics and metaphorical color designations in expressions, uncharacteristic for Russian. Semantic differences are explained by climatic conditions and cultural traditions of ethnic groups.
